557. Phase 6: SMP v7 Signing Fix
557.1 The Bug
After Reply Queue creation, SUB commands were rejected by the server.
557.2 Root Cause
SMP v7 command signing uses a 1-byte session-length prefix for the corrId+entityId+command concatenation, not 2-byte. The ESP32 was sending 2-byte Large-encoded prefixes for SUB, KEY, and NEW commands.

557.3 Fix
Corrected signing format in SUB, KEY, and NEW command builders. After fix, SUB commands succeed (server returns OK).
557.4 Stack Size
NETWORK_TASK_STACK increased from 20KB to 32KB to accommodate buffer allocations inside reply_queue_create().
558. Open Bug: KEY Command Rejected
558.1 What KEY Does
1. ESP32 creates Reply Queue (NEW) → gets rcvId + sndId
2. Peer sends sender_auth_key in PHConfirmation
3. ESP32 must send KEY: "This public key is authorized to send on my queue"
4. Only AFTER KEY can the phone send messages to ESP32
558.2 Symptoms
- Server does NOT respond with "OK" to KEY command
- Phone shows "you can't send messages yet"
- Phone status stays on "connecting" instead of "connected"
558.3 Possible Causes
- Wire format of KEY body incorrect (smpEncode of sender_auth_key)
- Wrong signing key (which Ed25519 private key signs KEY?)
- Wrong entity ID (rcvId vs sndId in KEY command)
- Command body structure (order / length prefixes)

Line-by-line comparison of ESP32 KEY handler with Haskell reference code in Agent/Client.hs. This follows Evgeny's recommendation:

563. Lessons Learned Session 34
L169: Strip ALL Private Keys from Logs Before Production
Severity: Critical
Private key hex dumps in debug logs are a security risk if the device is connected to any logging system. All 32-byte key dumps must be replaced with 4-byte fingerprints or moved to ESP_LOGD (disabled in release builds). Includes: DH private keys, chain keys, message keys, cleartext message content.
L170: Runtime Add-Contact Uses Ring Buffer Command Pattern
Severity: High
Creating contacts at runtime requires cross-task coordination: UI triggers intent, Main Task packages command as NET_CMD_ADD_CONTACT, Ring Buffer delivers to Network Task which has the SSL connection. The same pattern (NET_CMD_*) applies to any operation requiring network access from non-network tasks.
L171: Per-Contact 42d Tracking with 128-Bit Bitmap
Severity: Medium
A boolean flag for handshake completion works only for single-contact. For 128 contacts, a uint32_t[4] bitmap uses 16 bytes total and provides O(1) set/check via bit manipulation. Inline functions is_42d_done(idx) and mark_42d_done(idx) keep the API clean.
L172: SMP v7 Signing Uses 1-Byte Session-Length Prefix
Severity: Critical
The signed payload for SMP commands concatenates corrId + entityId + command. The length prefixes for corrId and entityId in the signing buffer must be 1-byte (not 2-byte Large-encoded). Using 2-byte prefixes causes signature verification failure on the server. This affected SUB, KEY, and NEW commands simultaneously.
L173: Per-Contact Reply Queue Array in PSRAM (~49KB for 128 Slots)
Severity: High
Each reply queue needs ~384 bytes (IDs, keys, flags, server host). 128 slots = ~49KB in PSRAM. Combined with ratchet states (67KB), handshake states (7KB), and contacts DB (35KB), total PSRAM usage is ~158KB (1.9% of 8MB). NVS persistence via rq_00 through rq_127 keys.
L174: KEY Command Requires Line-by-Line Haskell Comparison
Severity: High
When a command is rejected by the server without clear error, the only reliable debugging approach is byte-level comparison with the Haskell reference implementation. This follows Evgeny's recommendation of "100x reading to writing" ratio with Claude Code analysis.
L175: Stack Size Must Account for Buffer Allocations in Called Functions
Severity: Medium
reply_queue_create() allocates large buffers on the stack for TLS send/receive. The calling task (Network Task) must have sufficient stack space. Increasing from 20KB to 32KB resolved stack overflow during queue creation. Always check deepest call path for stack usage.
